The Video Game News For 08

Although the PS3 got off to a slightly slow start in 2007, don’t be fooled … the PS3 is gearing up for a great year with some early news. Here’s a rundown of three games released in ’08 … EA’s NFL Tour, HAZE by Free Radical Design, and Coded Arms Assault by Konami.

NFL tour

Hailing from EA Sport’s BIG division, it’s what can be considered a sort of spinoff from their hit NFL Street series. They ditched the streets and beaches in favor of the sands for bigger shows. No more games with barrels and side walls, you’re playing in front of huge crowds with fireworks displays and the 9 yards. There are some breakthroughs to the game too: if a player initiates contact, you have a chance to beat the odds, knock down the receiver, or give your shot a little more “umph.” Street gamers will see the well-known “Gamebreaker” power-ups, and much of the game remains unchanged otherwise, but an update on the look of the graphics. This game is out on January 8, so get ready!

Playing as a recruit in a corporate army owned by Mantel, a large supposedly peacekeeping organization, you are expected to play this game at least twice. Why twice? Well once on both sides, of course, this is because, playing on Mantel’s side, you realize that you, along with your fellow soldiers, are randomly injected with a drug called Nectar, but that leads to some unexpected consequences. Last time, through you, sided with the rebels you were fighting so brutally. With fantastic graphics and artificial intelligence that apparently does not seem useless … this gem will be released in the United States on January 18.

Konami released a PSP game early in the system’s life by the name of Coded Arms, and after achieving success with the title, they went ahead and made another in the PS3 series. Like HAZE, Coded Arms Assault is a futuristic first person shooter game where you play as a soldier. Apparently your character is a young hacker who has gained access to a system he shouldn’t have been in and who has been put into a virtual war. Bullets are replaced by Hexes and enemies are vaporized. With the game running, the Unreal Engine 3 expects great-looking graphics to match “digitized” effects. This game doesn’t have an official release date yet, but you’ll only seemingly find out when it’s released.
